Work Experience

HUB Publishers, CTO (2011-…)
Helping HUB move forward by implementing new technologies, structuring development work, layout groundrules and motivating coworkers. Structure backend systems (subscriptions, profiling, email, product database), and restructure it's online platform.
Sanoma Digital, IT Architect (2010-2011)
Together with two other architects we were responsible for all IT architecture at Sanoma Digital. I concentrated mainly on the architecture behind the high traffic sites like Nu.nl (10 million pageviews per day), all their social websites (web-log.nl, schoolbank.nl) and a number of smaller print titles. I initiated a wiki with technical data which is used internationally (internal). I was technical lead in migrating the heavy traffic Sanoma Digital Media Network (~1 GBit/s avg. throughput) from a proprietary system to a binary serving platform based on Nginx with a set of Lua-based backends, which has proven to be easier to maintain and future (and feature) proof.
IDG, Boston, MA, Senior developer (2008)
I worked three months at IDG in Boston. I worked on several projects including computerworld.com, infoworld.com and itworld.com. My primary task was to develop a tool (Ruby on Rails) to optimize the sales process and the creation of microsites. After this internship, I joined the IDG Tech Counsel, which was a newly formed body that aimed to promote technical cooperation (including sharing of code and ideas) between international IDG affiliates.
IDG, Haarlem, Online coordinator (2007-2010)
During this period I was responsible for the daily work in the development department and I managed six developers. Also, I advise the Management Team in determining the strategic direction of IDG Netherlands and I supervise the various online projects. In 2009, I have migrated all IDG NL sites from proprietary systems to Zend Framework, to better cope with future developments, and I immersed myself in NoSQL solutions (CouchDB, MongoDB).
IDG, Haarlem, Jr Developer -> Senior Developer (2002-2007)
I joined IDG as an intern in 2002 and in the following years was promoted to a medior (2004) and senior (2006) developer role. During this period I initiated the Zoom project, an online platform for photography enthusiasts, which in 2006 won a Web 2.0 award for most innovative project, and expanded my programming skills to include new development technologies. I also had an advisory role for technical problems.

External activities

I have given several presentations, both internally and at public conferences (eg: Dutch PHP developers conference, European PHP developers conference, PHP Day Italy, Rotterdam.rb, Rotterdam.php, etc.), in both Dutch and English.

Projects

Core competencies

Working together, sharing knowledge, digging into a problem, learning, curious, experimenting, strong analytical insight, people's person, natural leader, perseverance.

I believe in personal goals and use my inner strength to achieve them, I'm a fighter, a go-getter. I've set myself the goal to loose 60kg in 2 years (~130 lbs), and run the New York marathon. I know I can activate and motivate people to get the best out of them, and help them approach problems and solutions in a manageable way. I'm confident that anyone can achieve anything as long as they really want it.
